General Information about Monaco

Nestled along the captivating French Riviera, Monaco is a sovereign city-state known for its opulent glamour, illustrious casinos, and prestigious events. Despite its small size, Monaco boasts a rich cultural heritage, captivating visitors with its grand palaces and breathtaking coastal views.  The principality has become a resort for tourists and a tax haven for businesses. From the renowned Formula 1 Grand Prix to the Monte Carlo Casino, Monaco exudes sophistication and elegance at every turn.

To get a better understanding, Monaco covers only 2 square kilometers and it has a population of approximately 35.000 residents. This makes it the 2nd smallest country in the world and yet so luxurious and attractive to visit.

Tip: The smallest country in the world is Vatican city. Imagine how small Vatican city is, as Monaco is 6 times bigger.

Getting to Monaco

There are several convenient ways to reach Monaco, with Nice Côte d'Azur Airport serving as the nearest international gateway. From the airport, travelers can easily access Monaco via a scenic drive or through a train trip along the stunning coastline. The ticket from Nice train station to Monaco does not cost more than €10 and it's around 30 minutes trip (although I'm sure you will wanted to last more if it's not during the peak hour).

Additionally, high-speed trains connect Monaco to major cities like Paris and Milan, offering a comfortable and efficient mode of travel.

Transport: How To Get Around On Monaco

Public Transport: Navigating Monaco is convenient and efficient, thanks to its well-connected public transportation system. The city offers an extensive network of buses that provide easy access to key attractions and neighborhoods such as the Prince's Palace and the Oceanographic Museum. In addition, the high speed trains which are available allow you to visit other towns on the French Riviera as well.

Bike: Additionally, renting a bike along the picturesque port is a popular way to explore the city at a relaxed pace.

Walking: If you are visiting just Monaco, then a nice way to explore the city is by walking at your own pace. This is the most convenient and most common way especially if you want to explore the narrow streets of the old town!

Renting a car: Renting your car in Monaco is always a good idea.

Tip: During summer, which are the busiest months, public transport is overloaded and overfilled with tourists. Therefore, if you are using public transports it is suggested to start your day early to avoid all the congestion and chance of missing the train due to no more capacity.

Ideal Duration and Safety

To fully immerse yourself in the enchantment of Monaco, a visit of 2 days is ideal. This timeframe allows you to explore the principality's top attractions for example the old town, the aquarium, the Monte Carlo casino, indulge in its culinary delights, and experience the vibrant nightlife.

In terms of safety, Nice is generally considered a safe destination for travelers. As with any city, it is advisable to practice caution and be mindful of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas and tourist hotspots.

7 Top Things to Do in Monaco

  1. Explore the Old Town :

Wander through the charming streets of Monaco-Ville, where historic buildings, quaint shops, and cozy cafes await.

In order to reach Monaco's old town, known as Le Rocher (The Rock), you will have to walk a great hill. Head towards Port Hercules and follow signs for "Le Rocher" or "Vieille Ville." The walk is scenic but involves a bit of an uphill climb as the Old Town is perched on a cliff. Take your time and enjoy the spectacular views while you are getting up the hill. You cannot miss it as the palace is build on the top!!!

Once you reach the top, you will find yourself in a maze of narrow and ancient streets lined with pastel-colored houses, small boutiques, and cozy cafés. At its heart lies the majestic Prince's Palace, the official residence of Monaco's ruling family, the Grimaldis. The Old Town is also home to the stunning Monaco Cathedral.

With its rich history, breathtaking views, and serene atmosphere, Le Rocher offers a glimpse into Monaco's royal past and a tranquil escape from the bustling modern city below.

Tip: Please go to explore the old town and you will not regret it! It's the must thing to doin Monaco and if it is hot get plenty of water with you!

2. Visit the Prince's Palace :

Discover the regal splendor of the Prince's Palace, home to the Grimaldi family and offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. The prince and his family live in the rear part. You can visit the historic part where events and ceremonies take place, including the throne room.

The palace can be visited from March to October and the ticket price is €8 for adults and €4 for children (quite cheap for Monaco).

3. Discover the oceanographic museum

The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco is a world-renowned institution dedicated to marine science and oceanography. It is located on the Monaco Rock, just behind Monaco’s Old Town. The museum was founded by Prince Albert I in 1910.

The museum offers two different kind of experiences! There are rooms displaying the treasures brought back from the Prince Albert I voyages which offers both an educational and cultural landmark, highlighting Monaco's deep connection to the sea. In the basement, you can find the aquarium displaying hundreds of living species such as sharks, octopus, hippocampus and many other stunning species.

The ticket price is €19 for adults and €12 for children (quite cheap for Monaco as well). You can easily spend 3-4 hour in the oceanographic museum!

Tip: This was my highlight in Monaco. Not to be missed!

4. Experience the Monte Carlo Casino :

The most famous casino maybe of the whole world is the Monte Carlo Casino. Built in 1863, the iconic Casino de Monte Carlo founded by Francois Blanc, is an imposing presence with its Belle Epoque architecture. It is located in the centre of the city.

Do not get fooled from the luxurious cars and atmosphere which will you experience there, as the casino is opened for everyone (well you need to be dressed nicely with closed shoes). You can sit at the roulette or poker table and who knows, the next day you will be proud of winning from the Monte Carlo Casino. Quite an achievement.

Jokes aside, whether you gamble or not visiting the casino it is totally worth it and it will be an experience which you will never forget!

If you have the opportunity, attend the legendary Monaco Grand Prix, a prestigious event that attracts motorsport fans from around the world. If you are Formula 1 fan, visiting the Monaco Grand Prix will be an experience of a lifetime! The race takes place normally during the end of May.

The city transforms and has an electric atmosphere everywhere. The grandstand tickets sell for between 100 and 1,000 euros. In contrary, with Prince Palace and oceanographic museum this is not a cheap event to experience!

6. Walk around the port district

The historic district is also the busiest and less touristy than the Rocher. This beautiful small port located on the opposite side of The Rock is really a stunning place. You can walk along the long pier at the end, which is perfect for an evening stroll.

7. Take a day trip over to Eze

What is Eze? A French village close to Monaco, accessible by car and train or bus!

Eze, meanwhile, is a superb medieval village perched on a rocky outcrop and surrounded by cliffs on the road between Monaco and Nice.

You can get to Eze by bus which is the most convenient and cost-effective way. Take bus number 112 from Monaco. The bus departs from the Monte Carlo bus station and takes about 30 minutes to reach Èze Village. Another way to get to Eze is by train which take a short ride from Monaco to Èze-sur-Mer station. Once you arrive, you'll need to either take a local bus (bus number 83) or hike up Nietzsche Path to Èze Village. The hike is steep but offers stunning views of the coastline. If you have already read my previous articles, you will have understood that I hiked up to Eze Village and it is totally worth it! Make sure to have some water with you!

Once you are in Eze there are plenty activities to do.

  • Explore the Medieval Village:  Wander and get lost through the narrow, cobblestone streets of Èze Village, lined with charming stone houses, art galleries, and boutiques.

  • Visit the Exotic Garden (Jardin Exotique d'Èze): This beautiful garden is perched at the top of the village and offers breathtaking views of the French Riviera. The garden is home to a wide variety of cacti, succulents, and exotic plants, as well as sculptures that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. This is a photographers dream, due to the waterfalls and views on the top!

  • Visit the Fragonard Perfume Factory: Located at the base of the village, this perfume factory offers guided tours that showcase the art of perfume-making. You can learn about the process and even purchase fragrances directly from the source.

Tip: Whether you are visiting Monaco or other cities of the French Riviera, Eze should be in your to go list to visit!

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Monaco is during the spring and fall months, when the weather is mild, and the crowds are less intense. If you wish to experience the excitement of the Formula 1 Grand Prix, plan your visit in May.

If you want to relax and enjoy the sea and the sun then the best time to visit Monaco is from June to August.
